One has no idea at all how many unrecognised AIDS patients are lying in tuberculosariums.

The AIDS epidemic in the Ukraine spells: AIDS epidemic plus epidemic drug addiction plus tuberculosis epidemic.

Dr. Kochanski. Tuberculosarium in Tschernomorka

One of the many tuberculosariums situated even more remotely on the outskirts of town. Again there is no x-ray and just one car, driving the patients, food and the dead alike.

Just the same they're human beings.

Dr. Kochanski: "It is not as sad as it maybe appear. I think we should remain optimistic. Maybe we make it with joined forces. Naturally many of these people belong to the unfortunate ones, who are called the dregs of society. But just the same they are human beings. And we as physicians have to treat them."

Dr. Kochanski: "In the past we used to have relatively large sums at our disposition and the norms go back to that time. You know as well as I do, that in treating tuberculosis well balanced nutrition is already half of the success. The Soviet norms but also the current ones, still remain considerable: 220g meat, an egg, 50g butter, 21g sunflower-oil. Well, these norms are high. But we don't have the money for that. So one's got to keep them scarce. Three times a day they get something, but usually it is porridge, once a day meat... very, very miserable."

He is a good boy.

Ludmilla: "He doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, doesn't inject. It would be such a loss. A good boy. I feed him."

Ludmilla: "Originally he was admitted in order to die. Every day I bring him something to eat. Everything from my house. I look after him every day. Every day."

Ludmilla: "There are increasingly more patients, who are HIV-positive. More and more. And they die. Very quickly and frequently."

Ward physician: "Nowhere in town there are more HIV-infected than here. Among 240 patients we have 40% HIV-positive."

We have about 100.000 infected.

Dr. Kochanski: "Odessa is the sad lead in the AIDS statistics. Officially last year there were 12.000 infected in the city. That is registered ones. If one projects that: 15, 20, let's say 10 non-registered for every registered one. We have about 100.000 infected."

Dr. Kochanski: "And TB is an obligatory opportunistic disease. 49% of the HIV-infected have TB. And since most of them are drug addicted as well, we're having this clientele here."
